How many times have you heard this: “Gerard Butler would be the perfect Jamie!” Or: “Gerard Butler could never play Jamie because he’s too old.” Or my favorite: “No one could ever portray the characters as well as I imagine them.”
Well, that all may be true, but I think it’s fun to find out how other fans envision the characters while they’re reading about them. Here’s a glimpse inside my head, how I picture our beloved characters inside the Outlander Universe… KEEP IN MIND I’m only talking about physical appearance, NOT current age-appropriateness, acting ability or personality…
When I think of Jamie I think TALL, a head taller than other men, powerful physique, blue eyes slanted like a cat & high cheekbones. Add some red hair, a little length & “Chris Hemsworth” fits that bill for me! (photo/exposay.com)

The closest I’ve seen to a near perfect Jamie is Myles Pollard. Too-long nose, MacKenzie bone structure, and Fraser cat eyes: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1032034/. The rest are spot on!

Ohhhh I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post! I liked Jason Isaacs as Cpt Jack Randall. When I read Jamie all I could envision was Alexander Skarsgard, as for Dougal Mackenzie for some reason I envision Mark Strong. I am at a loss for who could play Claire though….any ideas?

Alexander Skarsgard definitely has the height/body to pull it off. My alternate for Dougal was a scruffy Clive Owen… Claire is proving difficult to pin down; I’m working on it. And I’m almost done w/Dragonfly in Amber(again)!

I think you have absolutely got it right. I love Helmsly and Jason issacs as Randall is superb. Butler looks just as I imagine Dougal. Great minds think alike (hehe). Way to go!

My newest obsession… Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy! He is my ideal Jamie Fraser. He has the looks, the tough/sensitive combo, and he is British…think he may be able to pull of the accent. He is a touch too short, only six one, but it could work! xoxo

Totally , Totally agree with your choices! I gave a rather-err-long rationale for Chris Hemsworth as Jamie over at Blue Moon Magnolia so I won’t repeat here. But I too see Jason Isaacs as BJR and Gerard Butler as Dougal would definitely work. I am still up in the air over the actress to play Claire but usually imagined Rachael Weicz when reading the series. Jamie, I think is the most important person to cast correctly.
