We know the production location for the tv series in Scotland: Cumbernauld. Official start date: Sept 13, 2013.
The Herald reports today that a converted warehouse in Cumbernauld will be used for up to 38 weeks, between now and next year, in a production which will see 16 episodes of the US show produced.An adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling series of seven books –which sold more than 20 million copies, the show Outlander tells the story of characters Clair and James Fraser, who use time travel to travel between the 18th and 20th century periods of Scotland.The series will see 200 crew come to Scotland, with more than 2000 supporting artist roles cast from Scotland and the rest of the UK, as the show’s top executives prepare to visit the ‘Nauld.” ~ Cumbernauld-media.com

Starz is betting on geek chic.
The network known for over-the-top epics with lots of sex and violence has ordered a 16-episode first season of “Outlander,” a time travel fantasy adventure based on Diana Gabaldon‘s best-selling series of books…

This just confirms for me that Starz is the perfect home for Outlander.

So much activity in the Outlander Universe today!
First and foremost, STARZ officially announced on their website that Outlander is an original series currently in development:
STARZ and Sony Pictures Television are partnering to create Outlander, an original series adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling books. The seven-book series has sold more than 20 million copies and has graced the New York Times best-sellers list six times. The eighth installment of the “Outlander” series is slated to be released in the fall of 2013.
Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in to irreconcilable lives. Yesterday we spent our entire time in a hotel conducting casting auditions. These auditions were pretty cool because they were for an American television series called Outlander. OK, a slight correction: the production people tell me that the sixteen episodes are all for the _first_ season. (And if all goes well with that…they then might get a second season. This is kind of how television works, you know?)

As for the “oh, they’ll RUIN it/oh,I can’t stand… to watch/oh, it’ll be cheap and cheesy/oh, they’re sure to mess up the characters/destroy the storyline, etc., etc., etc.”…comments, you guys are of course welcome to your opinions, too–but feel free to curb your enthusiasm at any time. <cough>
I am NOT writing this show. I am not CASTING this show. I do not have CONTROL over this show. (I do have input, and the production people are very kind about asking my opinion on things. This does not mean they have a legal obligation to take it. <wry g>)
You know why not? Because I don’t want to. I’m a novelist, not a screen-writer. I’m a naturally solitary writer–I don’t even have research assistants; my books are mine alone. Screen-writing, by contrast, is an intensely collaborative business.
Scripts go through dozens (literally) of iterations, being worked on by any number of people–then reworked by other people, over and over. A new director (for a show or an episode) can insist on a new direction or changes; an influential actor can ask for changes. Multiple writers means constant–and I do mean constant–collaboration.
I’m not a team player. (Ask anybody. <g>) AND I have books to write. Were I to be involved in a TV series beyond simple consulting, it would suck my soul, waste my life, prevent me ever writing another book, and be generally a Bad Idea. I’m not doing it.
I would also probably not be good at it, whereas I have a good deal of faith in the very experienced and talented people who _are_ doing it. I saw the pilot script and thought it was an amazingly good adaptation (by marked contrast to various film scripts I’ve seen over the years <shudder>).
So, you know….chill. <g> Cross your fingers, hope for the best, and if you can’t stand to watch, wait and read the reviews, and if it looks OK, you can get the DVD. <g>

SO- this morning during the breakfast conference at North American Publishing Expo NYC , Diana Gabaldon said Starz has officially signed on to make the Outlander series; she signed the contract last night! She said they’ve ordered 16 episodes, filming will take place in Scotland, is expected to begin sometime in September and she speculated it would be ready to air in April 2014! That’s less than a year!!!

I’ve learned that Starz has given a series order to Outlander, a drama based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling fantasy/romance/adventure series of books. I hear the project, from Battlestar Galactica developer Ron Moore and Sony Pictures TV, has received a 16-episode order, with production slated to begin in October in Scotland where the books are set. I hear Gabaldon let the news of the greenlight slip at Book Expo America 2013. The news comes a month after Outlander opened a writers room, with Moore hiring four scribes to work with him — Toni Graphia, Matt Roberts, Ira Behr and Anne Kenney. In an interview with Startrek.com, Ron Moore mentioned the Outlander tv series for Starz:
I’m developing a series called Outlander for Starz, which is based on a series of books by Diana Gabaldon. The idea would be to do a season a book, and she’s done seven or eight books at this point. It’s sort of a big adventure period piece with a romance at the heart of it. If all goes well, they’d also go straight to series and not do a pilot first. So, we’re hopeful. ~ Ron Moore

Starz To Develop Series Version Of ‘Outlander’ Novels From Ron Moore & Sony!!!
Finally! Outlander has a home with a cable network! Remember the tv series based on the Ken Follet’s Pillars of the Earth? It was so well-done (not to mention it was actually my gateway book to Outlander/Historical Fiction)! Also, the show Spartacus is on Starz—what a great place for Outlander to land!!!

Ron Moore makes a great choice considering how well he’s handled complex character drama in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica. That prowess for balancing high-concept universes with rich personal stories could very well make Outlander the next Game of Thrones.

In last night’s interview with Diana Gabaldon at the Trail of Fire launch (minute mark 42:45) she mentions there will be a press release from Sony about the cable tv series as early as next week! Stay tuned for more details!

“So EVERYBODY (maybe a few _more_ than everybody) asks me “So what about a MOOOOOVIE?!?!” Well, here’s how it stands: The books have been optioned by Essential Entertainment, and they (EE) tell me that they’re pursuing development of both a feature film and a mini-series, and will see which of those projects looks most promising. They’ve hired Anne Peacock to write the script for the feature film, the script has been completed, and…that’s about all I know…”

Yes RJ, we can dream! I am trying to keep an open mind about the casting; it’s possible that heretofore unknowns may be chosen anyway (or Ron Moore may favor some of his Battlestar Galactica cast?). I’m just so happy it’s being made into a miniseries vs. feature film that I’m willing to surrender to whoever is cast as Jamie (within reason, lol)…

My vote is for Chris Hemsworth (even before I knew who he was, he was what I imagined as Jamie) to play Jamie and I agree with Rachel Weitz for Claire. I have loved listening to the audio books after having read the series a few times. I can only imagine how great a series would be.

I’ve always wanted GB as Jamie, but it’s not only the age problem, he’s just too recognizable as a famous movie star and would not play well with the other actors. Sam Hueghan has been wonderful, is a Scot and has a beautiful deep voice! This is late, as we’re already thru the first book, and the ending was very difficult for me to watch, and there were episodes which were not in the book

how about max irons as jamie? if he buffed himself up a bit, he’s got the height, the amazing looks, the age appropriate face that can grow older with the series (if it’s good, it can go on for a looong time), and a fine scottish nose (if such a thing exists!). check him out!

Karen Gillan (Dr Who) to play Brianna, She’s Scottish, natural red hair and from the Highlands so has the perfect accent. Please no Aussie, English or American actors to play Jamie, Their ‘Scots’ accent tend to be Glaswegian (listen to Billy Connoly!) and not the softer, rounded vowels of an Islander or Highlander. As much as I love Gerard Butler, he is too old for the part. I love Chris Hemsworth for Jamie, he did a decent Scot’s accent for the film, and he can work on it 🙂

Wish people would stop going on about Mr. Butler – yes, he’s gorgeous, and if this book had been put into a film or a series 15-20 years ago, then he would have been perfect. As of now, he’s way to old for the part. My vote, if he buffs himself up, is Max Irons. Fingers crossed he can act. As for Claire, perhaps that girl from the Harry Potter series – but she’s awfully exposed. Really think a quality unknown is the way to go. Gerard Butler would be great for Dougal MacKenzie.

In my mind, Gerard Butler is Jamie, it is a role made for him.
Age is not an issue as so many have pointed out, Realistically makeup artists can put him at any age. The book series range his age from young man to middle age adult. Ahhhh…….. the magic of Hollywood.
Gerard is a standout not only for the accent (he has it perfect). I believe his attitude, stage presence and charisma will truly capture the spirit of Jamie Fraser.

Yes, he’s very handsome, but a tad old for the part, and not at Scot. He could work if he could do a convincing accent and they can make him look younger. I’m really hoping for someone new. There must be a big, burley, handsome young Scot, with piercing blue eyes and a royal arch to his nose out there that can act! Come on! In the whole country – there must be! I am thrilled Outlander will be on cable (Starz).
(I’m already drooling for the fall “Outlander” premier)!
What concerns me…are “fan” comments… (regarding who should or shouldn’t be cast).
When the Sopranos were “cast”, not many people knew the names: James Gandolfini, (Tony Soprano), Edie Falco (Carmela Soprano), Michael Imperioli (Christopher Moltisaniti), Aida Turturro (Janice Soprano) etc. etc. etc. etc.
I doubt Soprano fans can even imagine other actors in those roles.
My point being…. Keep an open mind about “unknowns” being cast.
Yes, I also want all the actors to strongly resemble the characters in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Novel. But you may be setting yourself up for disappointment when you become too rigid in your opinions.
I think it would be a mistake to cast “well known” actors.
Because, one generally already has opinions or impressions regarding “established” actor(s).
So, place your hopes and wishes on “casting” making a perfect “fit” rather than an “established actor” fit.
Most important, Pray that the screen-writer(s) does justice to this spectacular Outlander Series. (interpretation along with great acting) will make or break a series.

The address for the studio that they are going to be filming Outlander is 40-42 Tollpark Road, Wardpark East, Cumbernauld, G68 0LW, Scotland, it is a warehouse owned by Thomas Pettie Steel Fabricators that is being leased from them by Starz, you can view it on Google Maps but the view they have is wrong, you have to wander round to the other side of Tollpark Road to actually see the warehouse which shows the Thomas Pettie name on the front.

Just got through watching “Outlander” on the Starz channel “freebie” (they always let you watch the first episode free, if you don’t have the Starz channel, so as to hook you). My cable bill is already so high. I watch it on bittorent, links people post and share. But I am hooked on this show and it is as good as the book and faithful too, so far. I am gonna love this series!

As of right now a second season has already been ordered, and season 2 will cover Dragonfly in Amber (the 2nd book in the series). Hopefully it will continue to get renewed, with each season covering the next book a la Game of Thrones…

I am/was hoping that this show would live up to its hype. A mix of Game of Thrones and Dr. Who. I watched 4 episodes and came to the conclusion that this centers around a mixed up chick that can’t see the bigger picture.

Yes, dead guy, because in the future all of these people are dead. If they are alive, then perhaps she can change the future, thus killing everyone in the future, including her man Frank. But wait, isn’t Frank the whole reason she wants to get back to the future? What happens if Randall rapes her and she is then married to her great, great, great, grandson after all? What if she accelerates knowledge and technology by letting someone like David Hume know about advanced medicine and inadvertently wipes out all of human history from the 1700’s on? What about the druids that seem to control the stones and time travel, are they some secret society that is shaping the future? Forget the monumental discovery of time travel, screwing Frank or Jamie is the question that she struggles with. What a dumb broad and comical character. I don’t think this makes women look very smart at all. This show should be on lifetime.

Of course, I have to accept the shows (or books) universe and rules. In England, atheists could openly conduct themselves, especially in Scotland, such as with David Hume and his associates, all were Scots. David Hume lived in the very period that this story is set and was a well known Scottish academic (and heretic for being atheist). He is credited with laying the foundation for much of modern philosophy. So, some of the story about burning at the stake for witches is kinda… so so… maybe for some but not the society in general. The last official witch burned was in 1727 in Scotland. But… if the writer makes witch burning acceptable in her universe, then so be it. That is what makes a show or book good, the departure from reality.
I gave the show a fair chance, maybe I’m just a dude and cannot get into it because the main character is so unrealistic. Still, falling for a guy that is dead in the past, getting all wrapped up in the affairs of people that she has no connection with is just unbelievable. This is double true when she is physically close, just a few days journey to getting back to the stones.
She could write a letter to the above mentioned David Hume, who, I have no doubt that she knows about from her history, especially being from England. She already laid the foundation for using a sedative against her “captors” which could easily be substituted for a poison.
Right off the bat, she should have tooled David Hume and said that she was going to visit him, the Scots would surely have some interest in taking her to him, even if they did not see him as a reputable God fearing Scotsman. He was also involved with trying to over throw the King, so it would all line up with Dougal and the other Laird guys plan (sorry I’m not so into that I can remember the names). There is NO WAY those guys would not know who (Hume and friends) was wanting to overthrow the King and there is NO WAY Claire would not have known this because she is already tagged as the history nerd. In fact there was a whole bunch of truly awesome Scottish intellectuals that she could have invoked the names of to get access to them. It was just a few miles away in Edinburgh at the University (again, not a place for witch burning = unrealistic). Anyone of them would have wanted to conduct and experiment to see if she actually could go forward in time. She would have not problem impressing them with enough proof via modern medical knowledge which she waves about when the notion suits her; witch burning or not.
Even during that initial really long ride, she should have been coming up with a plan, not getting hot for Jamie. Even the minimal thought I put into a plan is better than hers and she had days to think of something. She is presented as bright, able, quick thinking, and a feminist. If anything would get her killed, it isn’t witch craft, it is talking back to the men of that time in a dis-respectful manner. That would be her greatest risk, but it appears to be her greatest draw for the fan base that likes her = unrealistic. That kind of attitude from a woman still won’t fly in the Middle East, so why does anyone think it would have worked back then? = unrealistic character.
It seems she can have it both ways, all the good attributes, but still the damsel in distress = not realistic.
But hey, I said the same stuff about John Carter goes to Mars; stupid guy can travel to Mars but instead used the tech just to run off with some Martian chick instead of starting DARPA with the US Army (of which he was a member). Maybe him and Claire should get together.
PS: I’m only expressing my disappointment over all the hype about this being all Dr Who + Game of Thrones with the time traveling chick that meets a Scottish outlaw. I got hoodwinked into watching and hoping for a good show when it’s a chick flick romance novel made into a show. BTW, Jamie is also a lame outlaw, he is more like one of the good guys/reluctant hero.
Hell, I’ll probably watch it all anyway once it buffers up a few episodes – maybe I’ll end up liking it. If you read all this, wow, more power to you.

Read all you had to say and had a good chuckle….but come on! As a book, its category is historical fiction/romance. Ms. Gabaldon does include quite a lot of accurate history in her volumes, and, yes, the fiction writer in her does take fictional liberties. But isn’t that why we read fiction – for the fantasy the writer weaves?! If you sit back and say, “baah…aargh, that’s not true…that’s never happen!” or “that dude is totally unrealistic because blablabla”, then perhaps you are right, the series isn’t for you. Also, perhaps you are not being honest with yourself? You said you thought this was going to be some sort of Dr Who/Game of Thrones thing (both of which are total fantasy), but were disappointed when it was less than realistic. Do you slam your fist in frustration when the Tardis is referred to as having a soul? No, of course not, it’s fantasy. Perhaps you are a tad confused….do you want it both ways: a fantasy fiction ala Who and Thrones with historically accurate and realistic characters? Come on. If you don’t like the series because the acting is poor or the action is slow or there’s too much Gaelic (which I happen to think there is) or Jamie’s smile is a bit too cheesy, then fair enough. But don’t knock it because it’s less than “realistic” or the characters don’t behave, pursuant to your expectation, in a way that a real person might. That’s just setting yourself up for disappointment. You really must chill and learn to enjoy/get lost in/loose yourself to things for what they are, in this case, not a chick flick or a dude flick, but wonderful love story, with fictional liberties and characters that are not black and white, but, like all of us, interesting in their complexities.

(My husband missed this, too subtle) But, I don’t watch it for any real intellectual info like “the Universe” or “Through the Wormhole.” I realize that it’s historical in nature, with romantic intentions. I like the point of view being so opposite that women seem to take with this show from men. This is the most interesting part of a show like this and it makes me wonder about gender roles and socialization verses innate feelings and views.
About the show and expectations. I get your point, but I think you kinda missed mine. Yes, I previously conceded and agree that you accept the writers universe and rules no matter how weird because that is the point about fantasy, you can leave your reality via a story for a new experience. If, however, that universe is populated with characters that do things for unexplainable reasons or bad reasons then it leaves me scratching my head and wondering about the motivation behind those actions. This may be one of those areas where women feel that Claire is great character with realistic motivations whereas a man (such as myself) sees Claire as being a character with odd reactions and questionable motivations. I caught myself thinking many times, “that is so what a chick would do” meaning she did something stupid.
The Dr. Who part only made me want to watch a show about a smart character that actually traveled back and forth through time. I don’t actually like Dr. Who and never said I did, I only like the concept. With regard to a show like Game of Thrones, the characters have fairly good motivations and actions that match there goals in the show. The dwarf is a good example. They are consistent for the most part to their surrounding in the context of the GoT universe. Unfortunately, winter never seems to come, so I’m getting tired of the show.
Claire, however, is brave and bold but hides under Jamie’s kilt; she is hesitant to show off 20th century medicine but then defies the priest and heals a boy; in her “voice overs” she references history then fails to capitalize on the actual history; she can manipulate people in all kinds of situations but cannot get them to simply take her back to the stones (which is clearly well within her capabilities but she consistently fails). Basically, it looks like a character that has all the admirable traits but cannot do some of the most basic simple things when it comes to making choices and choosing thought over emotion. Claire seems to be thinking with something other than her head and the obvious facts all around her. But…I get it. Romance novels need a ditzy woman to do emotional things or there is no story. It’s kind of hard for a white knight to rescue a woman that is smart, independent, brave, bold, with leadership characteristics, unless that woman is Claire who also so clearly needs a man while doing dumb things (ala it makes no sense).
As I said before, I’ll probably end up watching all the shows, but mostly because nothing else is on TV. Maybe it’s because the show is so slow and tries to act smart with all the introspective voice overs but instead comes off as more rationalizing or explaining the absurdly poor judgment and choices made by Claire. I actually yelled at my TV, “Come on, what the hell, that doesn’t even make sense!” as my wife yelled back, “Shut up, I want to see what she says to Jamie.”
If somebody knows what happens, please tell me she quickly gets back to the stones, goes to the future, does some research, goes back in time, makes a bio or chemical weapon to kill her enemies captures the royal crown jewels, buys some land, gold, stocks, and goes back to the future to be a billionaire time traveling goddess. Now we have a show.
Since I’m stuck watching this show with my wife…I pray this isn’t the case but be honest and tell me if… it’s all about managing her relationships and finding true live, being true to herself, understanding that time travel was just meant to make her blossom as a woman while understanding the torrent of emotions that run through her mind piercing her heart so thoroughly that she must abandon her love for Frank while simultaneously embracing what she knew at first sight; that she loved Jamie even before she was born and long after he died as they were destined to be together, bound by time (I nearly gagged writing that).

They can be smart, but do stupid things, those “why wouldn’t you do this or why would you say that?” sort of things. To Magnavision: At least it brought some passion in you, ie. yelling at the tv. Kinda’ reminds me of the French people’s reaction to the Impressionists. They actually tore the “new art” off the walls. But, I think that’s it’s good in this age of technology (people have become less and less personable) that someone still has the ability to react to something he/she likes or dislikes. Remember, it’s a romantic historical series. Romance many times disconnects one from rational thought or action. It’s a right-brain response.

She doesn’t let me get too carried away with dissing the show. She will vehemently defend Claire even though I can’t see how she is in the mood for romance when going home to a hot bath and her own bed is just waiting for her. So, Magnavision, you are a bit of a romantic. You can understand why Claire is trying so desperately trying to get back home, to Frank. Love doesn’t always make “sense” and messes with your logic, confusing you, and you find yourself making a lot of mistakes, and, as Claire, she does and says a lot of nonsensical things. She’s an “outlander” in a different time, just trying to figure things out as she goes. In her situation, I really don’t believe that she can possibly think of Frank as anything but the loving husband from which she was taken: just too much with which she must deal, like survival, as I’m sure can identify with being a vet. And in the book, she doesn’t even know how to protect herself and must be taught to use a small dirk. She’s seen men killed from afar with mortar shells, but never up close, with a single bullet directly into another man.
Jamie represents safety for her and a drowning person would grab on to anything to stay alive. But getting back to Frank, is her only mission.

But until you have a body of creative work to compare with Diana Gabaldon or Ron Moore, I think your energy might be spent better elsewhere doing whatever it is that makes sense to you. Leave the rest of us to enjoy the creative genius of the books and the series.

Diana’s books are my most favorite series ever. I cry every time one ends and I actually miss the characters – like they’re real people! Have to say, I’ve been underwhelmed by the Starz production. It’s been hard to loose myself in it as it always seems so staged. Caitriona Balfe is perfect, but Sam Hughan, though gorgeous, simply cannot act, or at least isn’t carrying this role like I had hoped. Maybe it’s because I’m so familiar with the books, but it’s just not that good. Probably not going to keep watching.:(

Been thinking about your attack. All I said was the truth “old news” Why don’t you attack the guy who really is dismissive of Outlander? I believe he goes by the name “Magnavision” And I have never attacked him or called him a “jerk”. It’s a television show about fictional characters put in an historical setting. And if this is a “blog” I believe I have a right to “blog” right along with all the other “bloggers”. I’ve defended Outlander all along, but it’s not a religion. You know nothing about me. It’s easy to type some words to someone you have never met. I’ve been to Scotland, walked the old field of Culloden, walked the streets of Edinburgh, and the “closes” where Jamie would have set up his printing business. In Edinburgh Castle, Mary, Queen of Scots was born and her mother, Marie de Guise died. I’m a descendant of the MacGregor Clan, who’s motto is “Our Race is Royal” due to the affiliation of the MacGregors with the McAlpins, the first high kings and queens of Scotland. I’ve climbed the William Wallace Monument (a real person), Stirling Castle, watched the Highland games in Glasgow, and the bagpipers annual competition.
And how does simply saying “old news” make me a negative Nancy and a “know it all”? Why don’t you review some of my other comments, instead of jumping to an erroneous conclusion about my character.
